New Zealand's rising young allrounder Rachin Ravindra received effusive praise from Australia's spin bowling great Nathan Lyon, who complimented the cricketer for raising his team's hopes of securing a victory in the Wellington Test.

Dismissed cheaply in the first-innings of the opening Test in the two-match series at the Basin Reserve, Ravindra struck an attractive half-century in the BlackCaps' second-innings and stayed unbeaten at stumps on Day 3.

Chasing a stiff target of 369 despite part-timer Glenn Phillips lifting New Zealand back in the contest with a fifer, the Kiwis lost two early wickets for just 35 on the board when the ambitious No.4 walked in and shifted the pressure back on the Australians with his free-flowing 56* off 94 deliveries.

Ravindra steered the hosts to the close of play alongside veteran right-hander Daryl Mitchell (12*), giving the Australians plenty to think about overnight before the play resumes on Sunday with the Test match nicely poised.

Speaking to the broadcaster after stumps, Lyon took a moment to praise the Indian-origin New Zealand left-hander for his fantastic batting and backed him to achieve superlative heights in his promising career at the international stage.

"You got to give respect and credit where credit's due, I thought Rachin and Daryl played superb innings there. Rachin seems like a really good player, first time I have bowled to him. Watched a lot of him during the World Cup and he's going to be a superstar. He played very well there," Lyon said.

Ravindra, who was handed a comeback in New Zealand's Test team with the series against South Africa earlier in the summer, produced a record double hundred against the Proteas in the first Test and has since grown from strength to strength.
