Trans-Tasman rivals Australia and New Zealand locked horns in the first Test at the iconic Basin Reserve in Wellington earlier today.

Australia had been put in on a green pitch at the Basin Reserve, as there was enough assistance for the seamers throughout the day.

On a pitch where run-scoring was difficult, the visitors lost wickets in clusters, reeling at 211 for seven before Cameron Green and Pat Cummins stitched a crucial 33-run stand for the eighth wicket.

While Green looked sublime, scoring a scintillating hundred, Cummins contributed 16 runs before Rachin Ravindra dismissed him.

In the 78th over of the match, New Zealand’s part-time spinner Rachin Ravindra bowled a good length delivery around the off stump and got the ball to turn. Although Cummins tried to block it, he missed the line, with the ball hitting him on the back pad.

After the on-field umpire declared him out, the Aussie captain immediately decided to go upstairs. The ball tracking showed three reds to keep the on-field call intact. As a result, Cummins had a slow walk back to the pavilion on 16.

Riding on Green's fighting ton, Australia powered themselves to 279 for nine at stumps on day 1.
