Tamim Iqbal refused to give his passionate fans in Bangladesh any false hope of him returning to international cricket, stating that a "lot of things have to be right" for him to consider making a comeback for the senior national side.

The veteran Bangladeshi opener, who last turned out for the country in September 2023 during an ODI series against New Zealand, is forging a controversial rift with premier allrounder Shakib Al Hasan and even contemplated retirement late last year.

Tamim announced his retirement before taking a u-turn the very next day, following discussions with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). However, the left-hander still made himself unavailable for the ICC World Cup 2023, with his ongoing feud with Shakib acting as a distraction for the team during the tournament.

Since then, the 34-year-old Bangladeshi stalwart has been active in domestic T20 with the Fortune Barishal franchise in the 2024 edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), but there is no clarity on where he stands internationally. Tamim recently also asked BCB not to consider him for a national contract, indicating he might not make a comeback at all.

"I would like to say one thing clearly. For me to come back, a lot of things have to be right otherwise there's no point for me to just come back and play," Tamim was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. "I am at a stage of my career where I would probably play for another two years. So I need to tell them such things and since I did not have a final talk with them, it won't be appropriate for me to comment here."

"I haven't spoken with him (new chief selector) yet. I was in communication with Jalal bhai (Jalal Yunus). I was available for a talk but unfortunately, we didn't get the opportunity. I will be travelling abroad tomorrow morning and hopefully after I return, we will sit," he added.

Tamim helped the Barishal franchise lift the BPL 2024 trophy after ending as the highest run-getter of the tournament with 492 runs in 15 matches.
