New Zealand's inspired selection of limited-overs maverick Glenn Phillips at the Test level is beginning to pay rich dividends. After bamboozling the Australians with a counterattacking knock of 71 in the first-innings, Phillips backed it with a maiden Test match five-wicket haul for the BlackCaps.

Taking giant strides as an all-round cricketer for New Zealand, Phillips brought his team back in the contest during the third-innings of the first Test at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, where his figures of 5 for 45 helped the Kiwis dismiss Australia for 164 and restrict their target to 369.

Just when the dominant tourists would've hoped to stretch the advantage to impregnable proportions for their Trasman-Tasman rivals to achieve, Phillips came to his team's rescue in the most unexpected fashion and produced a memorable 16-over burst that ran through the opposition batting line-up.

Phillips, who did showcase handy part-time bowling capabilities in white-ball cricket, took his off-spin two notches higher and dismissed prominent names Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey in his fantastic spell.

The off-spinner's fifth scalp was first-innings centurion Green, whom he got out caught bat-pad a sharp turning ball to the short-leg fielder Will Young.

Phillips' five-wicket haul was special in more ways than one as it also helped him bag a spectacular feat next to his name. He became only the eighth New Zealand spinner to have taken five wickets in an innings during a home Test.

The 27-year-old broke a longstanding jinx, too. His fifer is only second for a New Zealand spinner at home since 2008 when former tweaker Jeetan Patel recorded a five-wicket haul against the West Indies.
