The Afghanistan cricket team encountered an unexpected challenge in Barbados during the T20 World Cup 2024: the non-availability of halal beef at their Bridgetown hotel.

This dietary restriction forced the players to temporarily take on the role of chefs.

"Halal meat is not available in our hotel. Sometimes we cook on our own or sometimes we go out. In the last World Cup in India, everything was perfect. Halal beef is an issue here," a player told PTI.

This issue was not present during their time in St. Lucia, where halal meat was accessible. However, in Bridgetown, securing halal food has proven to be difficult. A friend arranged for halal beef for the team, allowing them to prepare their own meals.

The logistical difficulties have also affected the team's preparations. The Super 8 stage schedule is intense, with teams playing three games in different countries with just one day for travel in between. This tight schedule is compounded by the limited air connectivity in the Caribbean.

“There is uncertainty over flights and training schedule. We are often informed about it at the last minute. We understand that the organisers are doing their best considering logistical challenges, which are bigger in the Caribbean than anywhere else,” another team member explained.

India thumped Afghanistan by 47 runs at the Kensington Oval in their first Super 8 game, making an ideal start. Despite this setback, the Afghan team remains focused and is set to face Australia in St. Vincent next on Sunday 23..
