Afghanistan steamrolled a strong New Zealand side by 84 runs at Guyana’s Providence Stadium in match number 14 of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup. The win marked Afghanistan’s second in succession this tournament, as they strengthened their grip at the top of the Group C points table.

Rashid Khan hails openers and Farooqi for setting the tone

While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Rashid Khan acknowledged the magnitude of Afghanistan’s remarkable win over New Zealand, and praised his batters for putting a competitive 159-run total upfront.

The all-rounder also credited openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran for their 103-run partnership at the top. He said:

“It was a great performance from us. The way they played, didn't throw their wickets. They think to take it deep, overall a great win for Afghanistan. Yeah, it was just that we haven't score too many but we haven't lost wickets either. It was communicated to the batters to go hard in the last 10 overs and attack, looking at their options and match-ups. It was about the energy, the way Gurbaz and Zadran were running. For us, it was about putting in 100 percent effort each and every ball.”

Rashid Khan further credited ace paceman Fazalhaq Farooqi for consistently coming up clutch with the new-ball, as the speedster collected match-winning figures of 4-17 in the game. He added:

"Yeah, Fazalhaq Farooqi has given us great starts with early wickets and that has helped our spinners to come in and attack from the word go.”

Under the leadership of Rashid Khan, the Afghanistan cricket team also routed Uganda by 125 runs in their opening match of the tournament back on June 3.

Currently placed at the top of the Group C points table, Afghanistan will now face Papua New Guinea at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad on June 13 where the action will commence from 6:00 AM IST onwards.
