Afghanistan fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi left New Zealand shell-shocked by shattering Finn Allen’s leg-stump in the opening over of the innings. Defending 160 runs to win in match number 14 of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup, Farooqi sent down a scorching in-swinger in the first ball of New Zealand’s chase to give Afghanistan some much-needed early advantage.

Afghanistan paceman Fazalhaq Farooqi cannoned past Finn Allen’s attempted full-blooded thwack to shatter the cricketer’s middle and leg stump in the first ball of the New Zealand innings.

Allen, aiming to deposit the ball into the ocean without getting his eye in, completely played down the wrong line as Farooqi’s scorching inswinger breezed through his bat.

As it turned out, Fazalhaq Farooqi also dismissed Finn Allen’s opening partner Devon Conway a couple of overs later in the innings as New Zealand slipped to 18-2.

Earlier in the match, Afghanistan formed a competitive 159-6 from their 20 overs, largely owing to a 103-run opening partnership between Ibrahim Zadran and wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The latter of the two openers top-scored in the innings by cracking 80 runs from just 56 balls, while Azmatullah Omarzai at number three listed a valiant 13-ball 22 to keep the juggernaut rolling for his side.

The match marks the opening Group C fixture of the 2024 T20 World Cup for the New Zealand cricket team, and the second game of the tournament for the Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan side.

In their previous match, Afghanistan ravaged a hapless Uganda unit by 125 runs at the Providence Stadium in Guyana to top the Group C points table.
