A star-studded Afghanistan line-up decimated Uganda in match number five of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup.

After Afghanistan mounted a huge total upfront, their experienced bowling attack collectively restricted Uganda to secure a comprehensive win at Georgetown’s Providence Stadium on June 4.

Here’s the timeline of how AFG vs UGA panned out in Guyana:

AFG vs UGA Highlights: Afghanistan Races To 66-0 In Powerplay

After being invited to bat first, Afghanistan opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz got off the mark with a huge six over long-off fence against Uganda’s left-arm spinner Alpesh Ramjani. While Gurbaz took a special liking to Ramjani, Ibrahim Zadran smacked Cosmas Kyewuta and Bilal Hassan with a series of audacious strokes as Afghanistan raced to 48-0 in five overs.

In the final over of the powerplay, Zadran flogged Nakrani with four successive boundaries to reach 66-0.

AFG vs UGA Highlights: Gurbaz, Zadran’s 154-Run Stand Sets Up AFG’s 183-5

Emboldened by their own fiery start at the top, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran marched on to reach 100 runs in less than the first 10 overs of the innings. The two cricketers ended up sharing 154 in just 14.3 overs, with each cracking identical 70s from 40-odd deliveries.

As it turned out, Zadran and Gurbaz’s successive dismissals in the backend at the hands of Brian Masaba and Alpesh Ramjani halted Afghanistan’s run-scoring charge, as they managed to conjure just 29 additional runs from their remaining 33 deliveries to secure a 183-run finish.

AFG vs UGA Highlights: Fazalhaq Farooqi, Mujeeb Take Three In Two Overs

Defending 183 runs for a win, Afghanistan’s paceman Fazalhaq Farooqi breached Uganda opener Ronak Patel’s defenses in just the second ball of the innings. The very next delivery, the speedster trapped number three batter Roger Mukasa plumb in front of stumps for a duck as Uganda slipped to 4-2 in 0.3 overs.

Farooqi’s new-ball partner and young spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman deceived Simon Ssesazi with some extra bounce off the surface as Uganda’s run-chase troubles worsened at 8-3.

AFG vs UGA Highlights: Naveen-Ul-Haq Shatters Uganda’s Middle-Order

Afghanistan bowler Naveen-ul-Haq cleaned up Dinesh Nakrani, who tried to dab a hard length delivery outside off stump. The pace maverick also removed Alpesh Ramjani a couple of deliveries later for a duck to finish with figures of 2-4 from two overs.

AFG vs UGA Highlights: Rashid Khan Takes Two, Farooqi Completes Five

Just as Riazat Ali Shah and Robinson Obuya added some stability to the innings with a 29-run partnership, Uganda lost three quick wickets to Fazalhaq Farooqi in the span of a single over to slip from 47-5 to 48-8. Farooqi’s three-wicket burst also helped the senior Afghanistan fast bowler to finish with career-best and match-winning figures of 5-9 from four overs.

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan later claimed the final two wickets on offer to envelop Uganda’s entire batting line-up for just 58 to secure a huge 125-run victory for his country.
