On Tuesday evening, Babar Azam stepped down from the post of Pakistan's white-ball captain, and sent shockwaves to the cricketing fraternity. Babar relinquished the captaincy after Pakistan's shocking group stage exit in the World Cup 2023, and in a bizarre decision, PCB once again appointed him the leader, before the T20 World Cup.

Should Babar have resigned earlier? Ex-player thinks so

However, the results didn't improve and Pakistan crashed out of the group stage, and even lost to the hosts, UAE. The loss against UAE was deemed shameful, and many cricketer wanted Babar to step down from the captaincy post, something which he did.

However, former cricketer, Sikander Bakht, has lashed out at Babar, and stated that he should have shown some shame and resigned from the captaincy post after the T20 World Cup exit. Instead, Babar waited for a few more months before announcing the decision.

Bakht aalso added that Babar should have had some self-realisation earlier, considering that his form was woeful and he failed to contribute (both with bat and captaincy) in the T20 World Cup.

"Ab sharam ayi! (You finally felt ashamed!) As soon as our World Cup was over on 16th June because we had not qualified further, he should have resigned at the same time. The whole nation was saying that he should have resigned. But he was stubborn. Because his style was like this, he was king (In a sarcastic way). His performance was not good, neither was theirs," Bakht said to Geo News.

Babar felt disconnected from the Pakistan team

As per reports, Babar Azam felt undervalued and felt a disconnection with the Pakistan team. Moreover, after the T20 World Cup exit, the PCB hardly had any communication with the former captain, something which prompted Babar to take the captaincy decision.

He had a poor Bangladesh tour recently, and only scored 64 runs in 4 innings. However, the elegant batter came back to form in the Champions Cup, scoring a blistering hundred as well.
