In the early hours of Wednesday, October 2, Babar Azam shocked the world by announcing his resignation as Pakistan's white-ball captain. The 29-year-old was under the scanner after early exits from the T20 World Cup and ICC World Cup 2023.

Babar took to Twitter to announce his decision and revealed that the reason behind his move is to focus on his batting as he is on course to register his worst calendar year with the bat since his international debut. He also talked about spending time with his family.

Babar Azam Feels A Disconnect With The Players

Despite Babar mentioning in his post that he decided to step down as Pakistan captain, several fans speculated that the PCB forced the right-hand batter to resign. In the latest events, Cricket Pakistan have revealed the actual reason behind Babar's decision.

According to the report, Babar felt a disconnect from the players and sensed that he was undervalued within the team. Sources suggest that following the World Cup, the PCB distanced itself from Babar and there was a lack of  communication.

The 29-year-old was excluded from any consultation processes. Before announcing his resignation, Babar communicated his decision to a senior board official.

Mohammad Rizwan Likely To Be The New Captain

Following Babar Azam's departure from the captaincy, wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan has emerged as a strong contender to lead the white-ball team. Even, the PCB has started consultations with Rizwan regarding team selection.

Also, the team's head coach Gary Kirsten wanted a new captain in the T20I format since the T20 World Cup exit. He even discussed with Babar with his plans and reported the same to PCB during the report he submitted to PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. However, Kirsten wanted Babar to continue as ODI captain, but the 29-year-old was not convinced with that prospect.
