India's renowned wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan recorded a failure with the bat as he was dismissed cheaply in the ongoing Irani Trophy encounter between Mumbai and the Rest of India (ROI). Ishan, playing for ROI in the five-day affair, managed only 38 runs before Mumbai's Mohit Avasthi dismissed him.

The incident occurred during the 59th over of ROI's innings when Mumbai desperately needed someone to step up with the ball and break the stand between Ishan Kishan and Abhimanyu Easwaran. Ace speedster Mohit Avasthi did the job for the Ranji Trophy champions, dismissing Ishan at a crucial juncture of the match.

From over the wicket, Avasthi bowled a back-of-the-length delivery that moved away from Ishan Kishan after pitching around the off stump. As the southpaw tried to punch the ball off his back foot, he only managed a thick outside edge, with Mumbai's wicketkeeper Hardik Tamore completing a simple catch behind the stumps.

Ishan Kishan's Irani Trophy Failure Likely To Delay His Test Return

Before getting out, Ishan managed 38 runs with five boundaries. Despite a solid start to his innings, Ishan failed to convert it into a significant score, jolting his chances of coming back into the Indian Test team.

Since slamming a hundred against India B in the Duleep Trophy, Ishan hasn't been consistent with the bat, scoring only 60 runs in his subsequent three red-ball outings. So, his inconsistency might delay his Test comeback, with India likely to persist with the gritty Dhruv Jurel as Rishabh Pant's backup for the upcoming New Zealand series.

ROI Struggle Vs Mumbai Despite Easwaran's Valiant Ton

Despite Abhimanyu Easwaran scoring a flamboyant century, ROI has struggled to get going against Mumbai's rampant bowling unit. At the time of writing, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led outfit was in a spot of bother, placed at 267 for four, with Easwaran and Dhruv Jurel batting on 140* and 19*, respectively.
