With the IPL 2025 mega auction approaching and the player retention deadline set for October 31, all 10 teams are gearing up to reveal which players they’ll keep or release. Each franchise can retain up to six players, including at least one uncapped Indian player.

Though nothing official has been announced by the BCCI or any franchise, rumours are swirling about which players may be kept or released. When asked about these ongoing speculations at a recent event, former Indian captain MS Dhoni responded with his usual wit: “Everyone is a team owner now.”

"Whatever player they desire, whichever player is going up for auction and whoever they decide to purchase, we should be prepared for it. IPL auction works in mysterious ways," Dhoni said.

Recently, Dhoni confirmed he’ll be part of IPL 2025. As a veteran with five IPL titles as captain for Chennai Super Kings, he’s expected to be retained by CSK. This retention is possible after IPL council reviving the old rule allowing players who haven’t represented India in the last five years to be classified as “uncapped.” Reflecting on the auction process, Dhoni added,

“People enter the auction, and there's the uncertainty of where you'll end up. The most delightful aspect comes from the fans. They are the ones who make predictions on which team a certain player will end up with. Look, you find yourself in a market where all teams are well-funded,"of the IPL – it’s not just a trade; it’s a journey to a new team. You’re free to embrace it.”

MS Dhoni To Play IPL 2025

MS Dhoni has all but confirmed his participation in the IPL 2025 season, likely joining CSK under the uncapped player category for Rs 4 crore. This retention will mark a new chapter following his decision to step down from CSK’s captaincy.

The deadline for teams to submit their retentions is 5 p.m. IST on October 31, with Jio Cinema, the IPL’s main broadcaster, airing a special show on the announcements from 4:30 p.m. IST.
