IPL 2025 is now at its final stage, just a few more games left before we get to see this year’s champion. With Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator already done, some fans might be wondering: why isn’t there an IPL match today, May 31?

Well, the answer is simple. It has to do with how the playoffs are set up and the fact that teams need some time to rest and prepare before the next big knockout match.

On May 30, Gujarat Titans were eliminated from the tournament after a tough loss to Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator match. Chasing a massive target of 229 runs, Gujarat gave it their all, with Sai Sudharsan delivering a stunning performance. However, despite his efforts, the Titans fell short by 20 runs. As a result, Mumbai Indians advanced to the next round and will now face Punjab Kings in what’s known as Qualifier 2.

What’s the Reason Behind Today’s IPL Match Gap?

To understand why there’s a break today, it helps to know how the IPL playoffs work. The top four teams from the league stage qualify for the playoffs, which include three important matches before the final: Qualifier 1, the Eliminator, and Qualifier 2.

Qualifier 1 is played between the teams that finish first and second in the points table. The winner of this match gets a direct ticket to the final. The Eliminator, on the other hand, is a do-or-die match between the third and fourth-placed teams, in this case, Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans. The team that loses this match is knocked out, while the winner moves on to play in Qualifier 2.

Qualifier 2 is then played between the loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator. This match decides the second finalist of the season.

So far, we’ve seen Qualifier 1 take place on May 29 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings, followed by the Eliminator on May 30 between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans.

Since these playoff games are high-pressure encounters, the teams are given at least one day to rest and prepare for the next match. That’s why there’s no match today. The next game, Qualifier 2 between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians, will be held on June 1 in Ahmedabad.

Following that, the grand finale of IPL 2025 will take place on June 3 at the same venue, where the winners of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2 will clash for the trophy.
