Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers had a heartwarming day in Mumbai as part of the “Project Mumbai” initiative. The cricket legend joined the Mumbai Wheelchair Cricket Team for a practice session at Islam Gymkhana in Marine Lines.
De Villiers landed in India this week to support his former team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), in the IPL 2025 playoffs. The team has already qualified for the finals scheduled for June 3 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
While he is in India, the former cricketer took part in the ‘Project Mumbai’ initiative and spent a day at Islam Gymkhana in Marine Lines.
AB De Villiers Meets Mumbai’s Wheelchair Cricket Team
This week, AB de Villiers met Mumbai’s wheelchair cricket team during their practice session at Islam Gymkhana and played cricket with them. Not only did he interact with the players, but he also sat in a wheelchair himself and played alongside them.
The moment was filled with laughter, cheers, and mutual respect. De Villiers complimented the players' talent and enthusiasm, labelling it an inspiring experience.

De Villiers came to Mumbai to support Project Mumbai, a volunteer-driven initiative that encourages people to give back to the city. He volunteered throughout the day at various locations.
One of his destinations was a civic school in Malabar Hill, where he picked up a brush and assisted in painting classrooms to make them brighter and more cheerful for students.
De Villiers Cheers For RCB Ahead Of IPL 2025 Final
On the cricket side, AB de Villiers also voiced his support for his former team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), which advanced to the IPL 2025 final after defeating Punjab Kings. RCB will now play the winner of Qualifier 2 between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings. The final will be held on June 3 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. De Villiers said he hopes RCB finally lifts their first IPL trophy this year.
