In the ongoing fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has faced mounting speculation surrounding his future in Test cricket. After choosing to drop himself from the playing XI for this crucial Test, many fans and pundits speculated that a retirement announcement might be on the horizon.

Rohit Sharma had to laugh off the retirement rumours that were circulating. With his usual wit and charm, the Indian veteran dismissed any speculation about his retirement during an interview on Day 2. However, he did take a subtle dig at his own age while addressing the rumours.

“Arrey yaar, main kahi na jaa raha hu" (I am not going anywhere). Sensible aadmi hoon, do bachhon ka baap hoon, mere pass thoda sa dimag hai bhai” (I’m a sensible guy, a father of two, and I have a little bit of common sense)."

It’s clear that he’s not going anywhere just yet. For the unaware, he missed the Perth Test because he welcomed his second child, Ahaan, on November 15. He’s also the proud dad of his daughter, Samaira, who was born on December 30, 2018.

Rohit Sharma Not Going Anywhere Soon

Later, when pressed about his decision to step down for this particular Test, Sharma explained that he is just resting for the temporary Test and not retiring.

"I’m only stepping down for this Test, not retiring. I’ve been trying hard with my batting, but since it wasn’t clicking, I felt it was a sensible decision to rest for this important match. I’m still fully committed to playing for India."

Rohit’s batting struggles, especially in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) conditions, have been haunting the fans. With an average of around 15 in the last 10 innings in these countries, the pressure had been mounting on the veteran to perform. His recent performances have included scores of 6, 3, 10, 9, and 3 in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, further adding fuel to the talk of his potential retirement.

Despite the criticism, Rohit’s approach has always been balanced, and even from the sidelines, he continues to contribute to the team’s efforts. On Day 2, he was seen walking out with drinks to offer advice to stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah during a key partnership between Steve Smith and Beau Webster.
