Gautam Gambhir slammed for stealing credit [Source: @SelflessCricket, @GillTheWill77/X.com]
Robin Uthappa has made a sharp criticism of India's coach Gautam Gambhir after the recently concluded ODI series against South Africa. According to him, Gambhir did not give the deserved credit to two senior stars, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, despite their brilliant performances.
The series saw Kohli dominate with the bat, scoring a total of 302 runs in three matches at an astonishing average of 151.
Rohit also impressed, contributing 146 runs at an average of 48.66. Their performance led India to a 2-1 series victory.
Uthappa calls out Gambhir’s double standards on credit
Despite these achievements, former cricketer Robin Uthappa felt Gautam Gambhir didn’t acknowledge Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in his post-match press conference comments.
"What I found surprising is the post-match of that series, in the press conference, I didn't see Gautam giving credit to either Rohit or Virat. Here are a couple of guys who've batted out of their skins and shown us how good they are and how good they can be," Uthappa said on his YouTube channel.
Uthappa added that both senior batters performed their hearts out, but Gambhir’s silence felt strange.
"They reduced all kinds of doubts and shut down any naysayers about what they actually can do and will do for India when they are in the right kind of form. That felt strange," he added.
This comes amid rift rumours between Gautam Gambhir and the Rohit-Kohli duo. According to reports, there is a communication gap between Gambhir and senior players, which is a worrying sign for the BCCI ahead of big ICC events, including the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Gautam Gambhir addresses Kohli-Rohit future
After India’s ODI series win over South Africa, coach Gautam Gambhir avoided guaranteeing their spots for the 2027 World Cup to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
He noted the tournament is two years away, and giving opportunities to young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad is important. Gambhir hopes Kohli and Rohit continue contributing as they have for years.
