South Africa veteran Herschelle Gibbs spat fire on his social media handle while criticising Dewald Brevis for his awful performance in the SA20 2025-26 season. While Brevis was the most expensive player in the auction for this year at R16.5 million, his performances with the bat for Pretoria Capitals were below average,
Dewald Brevis was only able to score 6 runs from 6 balls against Joburg Super Kings after coming to bat at No. 4 during the 167-run chase. Against Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Brevis disappointed with a 12 off 5 while having the responsibility on his shoulder to guide his team towards a 189-run chase.
Herschelle Gibbs bluntly critiques Dewald Brevis
This irresponsible attitude on the crease raised a big question mark from the Proteas legend’s side as Herschelle Gibbs took to his official X handle to slam the young South African prodigy.
“Would love to know what the coaches are saying to this Brevis boy, his not showing any signs of game management even though he’s played plenty T20s already." Gibbs tweeted on his X account.
Further adding to the slamming, Gibbs wanted Dewald Brevis to take up more accountability for his batting.
“More responsibility must come from him but he doesn’t give me the impression he wants that. Batting is about habits and that’s not a good sign for him," Gibbs wrote on his X wall.
Dewald Brevis and his recent failures with the bat
In the lines of Gibbs’ thoughts, Brevis should have steered the ship for his teams against JSK and SEC, as on both occasions the team needed rescue. Against JSK, Brevis entered at 75/2 at the end of 10.3 overs when the run rate screamed a better response with the bat.
Against the SEC, Brevis was much more careless as the Capitals stood at 50/2 at the end of 5.2 overs, and Brevis recklessly bagged just a boundary and a six before he ended his innings to Lewis Gregory in the fourth ball of the 8th over. For the unaware, in both these matches, PC lost.
What’s more telling is that Brevis form has taken a downshift over the past couple of months. Against India in the T20Is, Brevis disappointed with only 689 runs from his 4 matches, averaging at 17.25. Against Pakistan T20Is in October-November, Brevis averaged 18.33 from 3 matches.
