SA20 is set to heat up as it enters its 4th edition, with Pretoria Capitals kicking off their campaign against Joburg Super Kings on Saturday, December 27, at the Centurion.

After finishing fifth last season, the Capitals will be eyeing to bounce back, chasing their maiden title. With the addition of strong new faces and a formidable squad across all departments, the Capitals look well-equipped to challenge the competition and make a statement this season.

Let’s dive deeper into Pretoria Capitals' squad with a sharper focus on their strengths, weaknesses and more.

Pretoria Capitals squad for SA20 2025-26

Dewald Brevis, Roston Chase, Jordan Cox, Junaid Dawood, Keith Dudgeon (temporary replacement), Connor Esterhuizen, Shai Hope, Wihan Lubbe, Keshav Maharaj, Sibonelo Makhanya, Lungi Ngidi, Bryce Parsons, Craig Overton, Gideon Peters, Meeka-eel Prince, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Will Smeed, Daniel Smith (temporary replacement), Lizaad Williams, Codi Yusuf.

Strengths of Pretoria Capitals in SA20 2025-26

1. Explosive batting depth

Pretoria Capitals boast explosive batting depth, with strong options from the top through the lower middle-order, ensuring firepower and flexibility across all phases.

  • Top order stability & aggression in Shai Hope, who offers consistency, Connor Esterhuizen adds stability, while young aggressors like Will Smeed and Bryce Parsons can provide attacking intent at the top.
  • Middle-order muscle in Dewald Brevis, the face of this team, who can add middle-overs' firepower, with Jordan Cox and Sherfane Rutherford bringing proven pace-hitting ability.
  • Finishing mastery from Veteran T20 superstar Andre Russell, who can deliver all-round explosiveness, making the Capitals devastating in the death overs.

2. Balanced bowling attack

The combination of quality pace and elite spin, offering both control and aggression through a variety of spin options, provides versatility across the powerplay, middle overs, and death overs.

  • New-ball control in Lungi Ngidi and Lizaad Williams as they can lead the powerplay with discipline and early wicket-taking threat.
  • Middle-overs enforcer in young, exciting Gideon Peters who can attack the batters with hard lengths and breaking partnerships in the middle.
  • Death-overs assurance with Ngidi and Williams return at the back end, offering yorkers, variations and composure under pressure.
  • Multi-phase depth with all-round options like Craig Overton’s and Andre Russell.
  • Spin control with the newly appointed captain Keshav Maharaj, whose disciplined left-arm spin controls the tempo, while leg-spinner Junaid Dawood adds attacking, wicket-taking variety.

Weaknesses of Pretoria Capitals in SA20 2025-26

1. Reduced powerplay firepower

With Will Jacks no longer in the squad, Pretoria Capitals lack a natural explosive option against the new ball. The current top order is more stability-oriented, meaning the team may struggle to dominate inside the powerplay and will need to find alternative ways to start aggressively.

  • Shai Hope has done well in T20 cricket this year, but still tends to take time to get going and may not consistently go big inside the powerplay in franchise T20s.
  • Bryce Parsons is an exciting left-hand option at the top, but relatively inexperienced at this level, making his powerplay impact uncertain.
  • Connor Esterhuizen is a solid and reliable batter, though not typically known for coming out all guns blazing against the new ball.
  • Will Smeed provides a potential powerplay solution, but Pretoria Capitals may need to reserve overseas slots for balance in the latter part of the XI.

2. Over-reliance on overseas stars

Pretoria Capital rely on overseas stars a lot especially in the batting department. They have very limited local depth, with few established South African batters.

  • Overseas dependence in middle-order is huge, increasing risk if form or availability drops.
  • Apart from Dewald Brevis, there is no established South African batter suited for a permanent middle-order role.
  • Daniel Smith offers promise but remains only a short-term replacement rather than a settled option.

Opportunities

1. Rise of pace prodigy Gideon Peters

Young fast-bowling prospect Gideon Peters has the chance to shine for Pretoria Capitals in SA20’s fourth edition, showcasing his ability to bowl the heavy ball, hit the deck hard, and act as a dependable middle-overs enforcer.

2. Dawood’s spin opportunity

Leg-spinner Junaid Dawood, who ran riot in South Africa’s domestic T20s in 2024, has the opportunity to rise and offer Pretoria Capitals a potent wicket-taking edge, strengthening a spin attack that managed just 15 wickets (least) last season.

Threats

1. Top order vulnerable to left-arm pace

Pretoria Capitals’ top order batters have faced early trouble to attack against left-arm pacers inside the powerplay in T20s recently. Opposition teams can exploit this vulnerability, targeting the top order to trigger early wickets and expose the middle order, disrupting Capitals’ innings construction.
