Dewald Brevis came to India with a lot of hopes to make a mark in ODIs, as he has already made his name in the shortest format of the game during the Australia series. However, the India series has not quite gone as planned for the right-handed batter.

In the ODI series, Brevis scored just 120 runs in three innings, averaging 40. He scored a brilliant fifty in the second ODI, but in the other two games, Brevis got off to a good start, but threw his wicket away.

Interestingly, in two of the three ODIs, Brevis has fallen prey to Kuldeep Yadav. At first, it seemed normal, but then it looked like a pattern, where Brevis seemed to have struggled against left-arm leg-spinners.

Brevis loves to play attacking cricket, but against Kuldeep Yadav, he got out in a similar manner twice, which was to slog sweep, but tossing the ball high up in the air. Now, besides the Indian dressing room, IPL franchises are also keeping a keen eye on Brevis, and it seems that the South African talent has a problem against left-arm leg-spinners.

This article will look at Brevis' overall stats and decode whether he actually struggles against left-arm spinners or if it's just a thing in this series.

  • If we look at Dewald Brevis' stats, then the right-arm seamer has done quite well in his career as he averages 28.44 but believes in his powerhitting and has a good strike-rate of 146.00.  Further, his career also includes a solitary century and four fifty-plus scores.

Let's shed light on how has Brevis performed against spin and pace.

  • If we look at Brevis' stats, then interestingly, he has better stats against spin. Decoding the data, then Brevis averages 28.44 against pace and 32.03 against spin. Further, the right-handed batter has also fewer dismissals against spin compared to 15 dismissals in 25 innings against pace.
  • Another key factor here is that the 22-year-old loves to take on spinners and has actually succedded in that. Brevis has a whopping strike-rate of 162.63.
  • The data is one of the reasons why teams don't prefer deploying spinners against Brevis as he loves to charge them and take the tempo of the game away from the opposition.
  • However, here is the catch. Let's further bifurcate the data and look at his stats among the spin variations and how has he performed against chinamans, finger spinners.

  • The data clearly shows that Brevis loves taking on the spinners irrespective of the format. He averages 100+ across all forms of spinners, the maximum against right-arm leg-break, where he has a strike-rate of 196.5 and also an average of 81.
  • Brevis has collected most runs against left-arm finger spinner and right-arm leg-spinners. However, it is the opposite when it comes to left-arm leg-spinners. Interestingly, before the India ODIs, Brevis had never faced left arm leg-spinners and it was in this series that he faced Kuldeep thrice and got out to him twice.

Dewald Brevis' new weakness exposed - an opportunity for IPL teams

Dewald Brevis is one of the most  sought-after players in the T20 cricket and will be a player to watch out for CSK in IPL 2026. However, rest of the teams can now deploy left-arm leg-spinners to tackle the Brevis problem.

The 22-year-old struggles to read the mystery and in search of his favourite shot, he oftens toss the ball high up in the air.
