In a major development, the BCB has cancelled Tuesday's BPL 2025-26 matches following the sad demise of Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. On Tuesday, December 30, Sylhet Titans were set to face Chattogram Royals, while the second face-off was scheduled between Dhaka Capitals and Rangpur Riders. However, both these matches have been cancelled, with the BCB set to announce a revised date later.
Former Bangladesh PM's death prompts BCB to postpone BPL 2025-26 matches
As revealed by ESPNCricinfo, Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia passed away on Tuesday morning, leaving the nation in deep shock. Zia served two terms as Bangladesh's Prime Minister, from 1991 to 1996 and then from 2001 to 2006.
The news of her passing changed the cricketing dynamics of the ongoing BPL, with the BCB cancelling Tuesday's fixtures with immediate effect. Khaleda Zia was officially declared dead at 6.00 AM, following which the BCB released a statement, confirming the rescheduling of the BPL fixtures between Sylhet-Chattogram and Rangpur-Dhaka.
In its official statement, the BCB mourned Khaleda Zia's tragic death, remembering her contributions to the nation and achievements as a skilled administrator. The board also expressed its gratitude to the departed ex-PM for providing consistent support for the growth of cricket in the country.
"The BCB recalls with gratitude her [Zia's] constant blessings and good wishes for the progress of cricket in this country. During her tenure as Prime Minister, she provided outstanding support for the development of cricket in Bangladesh, significantly contributing to improvements in cricket infrastructure and the sport's growth nationwide. Her vision and encouragement helped pave the way for many of the advancements the game enjoys today," the BCB stated.
"In respect of the nation's mourning and in honour of Begum Khaleda Zia's legacy, the BCB announces that today's scheduled Bangladesh Premier League matches have been cancelled and will be rescheduled. Further details on the revised fixtures will be communicated in due course," the board added.
How have these four teams performed in BPL so far?
Talking about the aforementioned teams, Rangpur Royals are placed second in the points table, with Chattogram, Dhaka, and Sylhet claiming the third, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively. Rajshahi Warriors are at the top of the pile with two wins in three outings, while Noakhali Express is the bottom-placed team, having lost all three matches so far in the tournament.
