Indian wicket-keeper batter Wriddhiman Saha recently opined on the ongoing conflicting views over the BCCI’s decision to exclude prominent names from their Annual Contract List for 2023-24.

The BCCI omitted key Indian players Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from their central contract list to boost the popularity of domestic cricket and to make sure that cricketers don't prioritise IPL over domestic cricket. Wriddhiman Saha’s recent remarks over the bold decision went viral, as the wicket-keeper batsman considers that you cannot forcefully ask the players to play domestic cricket.

He also discussed that playing domestic cricket will make young cricketers prosper in their careers and will also be highly beneficial for Indian cricket.

The BCCI contract list saga began with the board urging young cricketers to play the Ranji Trophy while they are not on national duty. However, as per sources, a few cricketers refused to do so and, in turn, got their names annexed from the annual contract list.

Wriddhiman Saha promotes parity in domestic and international cricket matches

Saha reflected on treating club and office matches equally with domestic and international matches. He discussed how he treats every cricket match equally and participates in the games whenever he is fit to play. Saha further highlighted that having a mindset like this will make a cricketer flourish. Wriddhiman Saha said,

“That is the BCCI's decision and the personal decision of the concerned players. Forcefully, you can't do anything. Whenever I am fit I play, even play club matches, and office matches as well. I always treat a match as a match. All matches are equal for me. If every player thinks along those lines, they will only prosper in their career and it will be better for Indian cricket as well.”

The wicket-keeper batsman appreciated that Indian Cricket does not stop with one player and there is always the availability of a reserve bench in case a player is unavailable. He further added,

“It is always good to see that your reserve bench is ready whenever somebody is getting a chance. Over that, some players are getting opportunities but don't want to play, which they shouldn't. Whenever you get a chance to play, you should play whether it is red ball or white ball.”

Saha will next be seen opening the batting and keeping the wickets for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League 2024.
