Afghanistan inked its name into cricketing history by clinching a spot in the T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals, ousting none other than Australia. This historic achievement came with a nail-biting 8-run victory over Bangladesh on Tuesday.

While the cricketing fraternity was rejoicing the Afghan spirit, the spotlight quickly shifted to a social media storm, as Afghanistan’s Najibullah Zadran savagely mocked Australia’s Pat Cummins.

Najibullah Zadran's tweet turned Pat Cummins' prediction into a joke

Australia, reeling from defeats to Afghanistan and India in the Super 8 stage, found their semifinal hopes hanging by a thread. They needed Bangladesh to defeat Afghanistan, which would have allowed Australia to advance on a superior Net Run Rate.

But destiny had a different script. Afghanistan emerged victorious, ending Australia’s campaign and sparking a wave of celebration and mockery.

Pat Cummins, Australia’s captain and the hero behind their ODI World Cup and World Test Championship victories in 2023, had made a confident prediction before the tournament.

When asked to predict the semifinalists, Pat Cummins had boldly stated, "Definitely Australia. And then you can choose which three you want."

Oh, how the mighty have fallen! As Australia’s dreams evaporated, Afghanistan’s Najibullah Zadran took to social media to deliver a stinging blow.

Mocking Cummins’ pre-tournament arrogance, Najib tweeted:

"Q: How is the top 4 semi-finalist? A: definitely Australia other 3 you choose," along with the flight, shushing face and zipped mouth emojis, sending the internet into a frenzy of laughter and disbelief.

It is worth mentioning that Afghanistan's path to the semifinals has been nothing short of a fairy tale. After stunning New Zealand in the group stages, they delivered a knockout punch to Australia in the Super 8.

Their dramatic, rain-soaked clash against Bangladesh was the icing on the cake. With high stakes and even higher tensions, Afghanistan held their nerve to secure a thrilling 8-run victory, making history in the process.

Now, the stage is set for Rashid Khan and his courageous team to face South Africa in the first semifinal, while India will battle England in the second, both matches scheduled for June 27.
