Dewald Brevis has been nicknamed “Baby AB” for years but in Darwin on Tuesday, the young South African batted like the real deal. In the second T20I against Australia at the Marrara Cricket Ground, Brevis smashed his way into the history books with a whirlwind 125 off 56 balls, bringing up his century in just 41 deliveries, the fastest ever against Australia in T20Is.

And when you break records like that, AB de Villiers himself is bound to take notice. Soon after Brevis brought up his ton, AB de Villiers took to X to shower praise on the youngster and throw in a cheeky IPL remark.
“There was such a golden opportunity for IPL teams to pick up Dewald Brevis at the auction! Missed out badly. CSK either got very lucky, or maybe the biggest master stroke ever. The boy can play @BrevisDewald,” ABD posted.
For someone like AB, who has seen and played some of the greatest knocks in T20 history, that is no small compliment.
AUS vs SA 2nd T20I: Records Tumbled In Darwin
Brevis didn’t just beat Australia into submission, he rewrote the record books. He broke Martin Guptill’s record for the fastest T20I ton against Australia (49 balls), became the first player to score a hundred in a T20I between the two nations and went past Quinton de Kock’s 43-ball effort to claim the second-fastest T20I ton for South Africa.
The only Protea above him on that list is David Miller, with his 35-ball blitz against Bangladesh in 2017. As if that wasn’t enough, Brevis’ 125 is now the highest individual T20I score by a South African, outstripping everything that has come before.
From IPL Snub To CSK Masterstroke
It is worth mentioning that Brevis went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction. But when CSK lost Gurjapneet Singh to injury, they swooped in and picked up the 22-year-old as a replacement. What followed was a run-fest with 225 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 180 and two fifties to his name.
Now, after this Darwin demolition job, it’s a safe bet that CSK won’t be letting go of him anytime soon. In fact, with ABD calling it “the biggest master stroke ever,” the Chennai camp must be grinning from ear to ear.
For years, fans have been looking for the next AB de Villiers. On Tuesday, in Darwin, Dewald Brevis didn’t just look like the heir; he played like the king. And when the king himself tips his crown in your direction, you know you have arrived.
