'Chahal Is Being Ignored, I Don’t Know Why' - Harbhajan On Veteran Leggie's T20I Snub

Yuzvendra Chahal's fall off the reckoning in India's T20I scheme ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 has surprised Harbhajan Singh as the former India spinner batted for the veteran leggie's reinclusion in the squad before the biannual ICC event in June.

Chahal, who last played for India in August during the T20I series against the West Indies, became the scapegoat of the team's disappointing 3-2 loss and has since been dropped with Ravi Bishnoi and Kuldeep Yadav finding preference in the wrist-spinner category.

Truth be told, however, the Haryana tweaker faced the brunt of a prolonged dip in his output in the shortest format for India. Amidst questions raised on his skillset and ability to withstand the rampaging batters on flat pitches, Chahal's T20I record since January 2019 stands at 52 wickets taken in 53 matches at an expensive economy rate of 8.40.

Harbhajan Questions Chahal Snub

The Indian selectors may not be interested in Chahal at this stage but Harbhajan reckons he should be one of the first picks in the T20I format before the team travels to the Caribbean & USA after the completion of IPL 2024.

"I would keep Yuzvendra Chahal ahead (for the first slot among spinners). He is being ignored, I don’t know why. I don’t think he knows as well. But even today, I don’t think there is a better leg-spinner in the country."

"I don’t think there is a braver spinner than him. He has a very sharp mind. The second spinner for me would be Ravindra Jadeja. You need to have an off-spinner in Washington Sundar as well. Now, what selectors think, what the management thinks, is a different thing," he added.

Chahal's next and probably final opportunity to make amends will come in March-May when he turns up for Rajasthan Royals (RR). The experienced bowler remains an integral part of the Royals side and will be hoping to earn a backdoor entry into India's T20I plans.
