Shubman Gill is set to make his captaincy debut for the Gujarat Titans franchise this IPL 2024 season. Ahead of his team’s opening match against Mumbai Indians, injured Titans speedster Mohammed Shami has issued an honest advice for the newly-appointed skipper and star opening batsman.

According to Shami, captaincy came a bit too “early” for Gill considering he was assigned the role just a couple of months ago after Hardik Pandya’s sudden departure from the team.

Shami asks Shubman Gill to have ‘patience’

Gujarat Titans fast bowler Mohammed Shami, set to miss the entire IPL 2024 season owing to an injury, believes captaincy came a bit early for Shubman Gill.

However, the star speedster added that he is not surprised over Gill’s sudden promotion considering the opening batter has been performing well since the past couple of seasons.

While speaking with CricBuzz, Mohammed Shami said:

“The captaincy came early, and he wouldn't have expected it; I feel the same. But you had to take the responsibility one day. You have been performing well in past seasons and producing good performances in international cricket, too.”

Mohammed Shami further advised Shubman Gill to be “normal” and be “patient” in his new role. He added:

“You don't have to take too much load over the captaincy, just be normal and have patience. The more you stay calm, the better it will be. You have the responsibility now; you can't say no. Just focus on your skills and how you can balance your team.”

Shubman Gill was appointed as Gujarat Titans captain back in December 2023 after regular skipper Hardik Pandya made a transfer to his former team Mumbai Indians.

Under Pandya’s leadership, the Titans lifted the IPL trophy in 2022 and finished runners-up to Chennai Super Kings the following season.

As of now, a Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans group will commence their IPL 2024 campaign with a match against Pandya’s Mumbai Indians on March 24 at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
