After being appointed as the new captain of Gujarat Titans (GT), Shubman Gill expressed his delight and pride in assuming the leadership role for the team. He extended his gratitude to the franchise for entrusting him with the captaincy, leading a team that had shown remarkable performances in the previous seasons.

Gill's elevation to captaincy came in the wake of Hardik Pandya's confirmed trade to Mumbai Indians (MI). Pandya, who successfully led the Titans to victory in 2022 and the final in 2023, left a void that GT decided to fill with the young and talented Gill.

Despite expectations among fans for former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) skipper Kane Williamson or GT vice captain Rashid Khan to be the next skipper, the franchise opted for the relatively inexperienced but promising Shubman Gill.

"I am delighted and proud to assume the captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. We have had two exceptional seasons, and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket," said Shubman Gill in response to his appointment.

Gill, who began his IPL journey with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2018, joined GT in 2021 for a sum of Rs 7 crore. Since then, he has become a key player for the franchise, providing explosive starts to set the tone for the innings.

In his debut season with GT under Hardik's leadership, Gill scored 483 runs in 16 games at an average of 34.50 and a strike rate of 132.33, including four half-centuries. He continued his stellar performance in IPL 2023, emerging as the leading run scorer with an impressive 890 runs in 17 matches at an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80. This remarkable run included three centuries and four fifties, contributing significantly to Gujarat's runner-up finish.

Gill's appetite for big scores was evident with his three centuries in the 2023 IPL for the franchise. As he takes on the captaincy role, he will benefit from the guidance of former India pacer Ashish Nehra, who serves as GT's head coach, providing valuable insights for the challenging tournament ahead.
