Legendary Indian cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar has penned a heartfelt message for the victims of the Bengaluru Stampede which occurred on June 4 outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The tragic incident took place when the Royal Challengers Bengaluru had their title winning celebration inside the Chinnaswamy Stadium and it created chaos outside the ground.

What did Gavaskar say on Bengaluru Stampede?

At-least 11 people were killed and 50 got injured as several of the top RCB members were arrested by the Karnataka Police. In his column for Mid-Day, Gavaskar described the incident as "heartbreaking", and indirectly blamed the RCB fans for the unfortunate happening.

“If RCB had won the Trophy in the first few years, there would not have been this outpouring of emotion as happened after the long wait of 18 years. Other teams have won but their celebrations have been a lot less frenetic maybe because their fans didn’t have to wait this long. The slogan ‘Ee saala cup naamde’ seemed to be like a millstone around the necks of the team. This year, when that slogan was barely heard, the team played some superb cricket, most of it away from their fans," as quoted by Sportskeeda.

“It was totally understandable for their joy to know no bounds and they wanted to show it to their heroes. Maybe even see them up close, maybe even touch them, maybe even get a quick photo with them. Haven’t we all been fans of someone before and perhaps still are and want to see them and have a brief hello and then perhaps a photo with them?” Gavaskar concluded.

RCB ended their 18-year drought

On June 3, RCB ended their 18-year title drought as they finally captured the IPL title since the league's inception. Despite boasting an immense popularity and having some of the best players from across the globe, the IPL trophy was far away from the RCB cabinet, however, this season, the streak was broken as the Rajat Patidar led side finally did the unthinkable.

Not only Patidar, but star man Virat Kohli led from the front in terms of runs as the team broke their long-standing jinx.
