As India gears up for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting in just a few days, all eyes will be on the talented and in-form Yashasvi Jaiswal. The dynamic opener has started his Test career with a bang, smashing records left, right and centre.
Yuvraj Offers Jaiswal Key Insights for Success Against Australia
But former India star Yuvraj Singh isn’t letting the hype go to Jaiswal’s head. With Australia’s bowlers lurking, Yuvraj has a few words of advice and caution for the 22-year-old prodigy.
Jaiswal might have set the pitch on fire in recent series, including an astounding showing against England where he piled on 700 runs with back-to-back double centuries, but Yuvraj knows Australia’s bowling attack is an entirely different beast.
“He is an exceptional talent. But it’ll be a big test for him,” Yuvraj told Mid-Day. “If he is able to counter the bounce, he will score big. The same goes for Sarfaraz Khan. Australia will attack you with the short ball.”
Yuvraj has seen firsthand what it takes to thrive against the Aussies. From his blistering debut in the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy to his role role in India’s 2011 World Cup quarter-final win, he’s no stranger to standing tall against Australia.
“They’re not going to back down. It’ll be a challenge to beat them, but India’s done it before, so there’s no reason we can’t do it again,” he added.
Will Yashasvi Jaiswal Rise to the Aussie Challenge?
With Rohit Sharma on paternity leave and Shubman Gill sidelined by injury, Jaiswal faces the added pressure of opening alongside KL Rahul in the first Test. In a squad filled with young guns like Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan, it’s Jaiswal who carries high expectations.
And though his overall record shines, his limited experience on fast, bouncy tracks could be a challenge. His outings in similar conditions in South Africa didn’t go as planned, with scores of 17, 5, 0, and 28 across two games. But if Jaiswal can handle their aggression, Yuvraj feels he has the ability to perform and make the world take note of him.
Meanwhile, as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener approaches, Yuvraj’s words indicate Australia will give no free passes. For Yashasvi Jaiswal, the next few weeks could define his career as he stands at the edge of what might be his greatest challenge yet.
