With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy just around the corner, one big question on everyone’s mind has been how India will fare without their captain, Rohit Sharma, for the opening Test in Perth. Rohit will be sitting this one out, staying back in India to be with his family after welcoming his second child (a son) recently, leaving Jasprit Bumrah to lead the side.
Travis Head Supports Rohit Sharma’s Paternity Leave
Some fans are a bit torn over the decision, but Australia’s star batter, Travis Head, has jumped in to show his full support for Rohit’s choice.
Travis Head, who recently became a dad for the second time himself, totally gets where Rohit’s coming from. In an interview with RevSportz, Head made it clear that he’d make the same call in Rohit’s shoes.
“I 100 percent support that decision on Rohit, I’d do the same thing in the same situation,” he shared. “It's one of those big sacrifices as a cricketer, and we do live very privileged lives and we do get well looked after, but at the same time we miss important milestones, so I 100 percent support it."
It’s refreshing to see Head showing such understanding, especially given his own track record of scoring against India in big games. His centuries were crucial in Australia’s wins in the WTC final and the ODI World Cup last year, making him one of India’s biggest threats.
Travis Head Confident India Will Still Be Dangerous
Head doesn’t think Rohit Sharma's absence is going to make things easy for Australia. He’s watched India overcome setbacks before and knows better than to write them off.
“If you go on history, you wouldn’t rule out any Indian team,” Head said, referencing their 2020-21 tour when Virat Kohli left midway to be with his family. Despite all the doubts, India came out on top.
India might not have Rohit in Perth, but Head is all too aware of how strong the squad is, no matter who plays.
“The last couple series we’ve played against them, they’ve had injuries and people questioning them a fair bit. They rolled out some pretty good performances, so whoever they play is going to be a pretty strong team, I wouldn’t worry about that,” he added.
Meanwhile, as India gears up to take on Australia at the Optus Stadium, Rohit’s return is expected for the second Test, giving India fans a reason to hope their captain will be back to join the action.
