England’s ageing warrior James Anderson got the old ball swinging on a flat Vizag surface against India. Making his comeback to the Test lore, the legendary speedster worked over India’s number three Shubman Gill on the opening day, before picking up the key wickets of Ravichandran Ashwin and double-centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal the following morning.

Anderson eventually finished with figures of 3-47, while spinners Shoaib Bashir and Rehan Ahmed ensured Team India stayed down at 396 in their first innings despite Jaiswal’s sublime double ton.

Former Indian cricketer and active commentator Sanjay Manjrekar hailed Anderson’s industrious efforts on the first two days of the Vizag Test match, and claimed that the legendary English speedster is a “reminder of the legacy of great fast bowlers”.

Manjrekar lauds James Anderson for toppling Gill

Sanjay Manjrekar hailed a 41-year-old James Anderson for bowling his heart out on a Vizag surface “that had nothing for him.” The former Indian cricketer also praised the Englishman for besting several hosts batters, including top-order star Shubman Gill with an outside off-stump line.

“He is a reminder of the legacy of great fast bowlers we had over the years. He is right at the end of his career, yet, on a pitch that had nothing for him, he had the Indian batters beaten outside off stump. Eventually getting a batter (Gill) caught by the keeper. That is a very rare thing to happen on Indian pitches," Manjrekar told ESPNcricinfo.

The English think-tank fielded with Mark Wood as their primary pacer in the series-opening first Test match at Hyderabad in late-January. With Wood going wicketless across both innings of the game, the tearaway paceman was replaced by James Anderson for the second Test with England unleashing a three-pronged spin attack alongside him.

In the Vizag Test, Team India enveloped for just 396 despite Yashasvi Jaiswal accounting for 209 of those runs. The next best effort of 34 from the Indian innings came from Shubman Gill’s bat, as a number of Indian cricketers failed to capitalise on their confident starts.
