Young paceman Xavier Bartlett has been rested from Australia’s squad for the second ODI against West Indies, set to be staged at the SCG on February 4. Cricket Australia also released Travis Head from the rest of the white-ball fixtures against West Indies, thus setting up the last-minute additions of Spencer Johnson and Josh Hazlewood into the line-up.

Bartlett, who made his international debut through the series opener at the MCG, is expected to join the Australian squad for the third match.

Cricket Australia is carefully managing Xavier Bartlett’s workload considering the young speedster suffered a back injury a few months ago.

After bagging the ‘Player of the Match’ on his international debut in the first ODI of the series against West Indies, the 25-year-old paceman said: “I was injured at the start of this year and didn't have a chance to play any domestic cricket, which was a frustrating time.”

Josh Hazlewood was among the seniors initially rested for the West Indies matches. However, the seasoned fast bowler will now be filling in for Bartlett for the second ODI on February 4.

Spencer Johnson, who played his only ODI at Indore against India last September, will be joining the Australian squad for the final match of the series.

Travis Head has also been released from the squad for the remaining two ODIs as well as from the entire T20I series. The dashing left-handed batter was out for a ‘king pair’ in the second Test at The Gabba and was knocked over for just four wins in the opening ODI match. As of now, no replacement for Head has been named yet and the opening batsman is expected to return for the T20I series in New Zealand later this month.
