Mohammed Shami has faced a challenging period since his last appearance in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Despite initially not being a first-choice player for India in the tournament, he made a significant impact once he was brought into the playing XI.

The 34-year-old ace bowler emerged as the highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 24 wickets in just seven matches and played a crucial role in leading India to the final.

Mohammed Shami Reflects On His Struggles After Injury

Initially not a part of India's first-choice XI, Shami's inclusion came about due to an injury to Hardik Pandya during the group-stage match against Bangladesh. His performance was a key factor for the Men in Blue, although the team ultimately fell short of clinching the title.

Despite his exceptional run, Shami faced a significant setback with an ankle injury during the tournament, which required surgery in February this year.

This injury has kept him away from the game, and that marked a difficult phase in his career as he focuses on his recovery and returns to full fitness.

According to the reports of Hindustan Times, at the CEAT Cricket Awards last month, Shami reflected on his World Cup experience.

In a conversation with anchor Mayanti Langer, India's star bowler shared his thoughts on how he has consistently made impactful comebacks in all three ODI World Cups he has participated in. However, he also added that he was not the first-choice player at the start of each campaign.

When asked about his ability to produce strong performances after being on the sidelines. He stated that-“In 2015, 2019, and 2023, I had the same start. When I was given a chance, the performances, thanks to god, they never thought of dropping me again. You can call to hard work, but I'm always ready for a chance. Only when you're ready can you prove yourself. Otherwise, I can only run to the field to give water! It's better to seize the opportunity when you get it.”

Mohammed Shami Likely To Play Ranji Trophy

Mohammed Shami is currently under a careful and intensive rehabilitation process following his significant ankle injury, which he sustained during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

After acknowledging the severity of his injury, Shami has wisely opted for a gradual return to cricket. He recently stated that he would likely focus first on regaining his full fitness through domestic cricket before donning the Indian jersey again.

It is important to note that, the Indian team management is closely monitoring his rehabilitation, with a strong emphasis on his long-term fitness.
