'A Top 5 Bowler In IPL': R Ashwin Applauds Dark Horse Sandeep Sharma's Heroics Vs LSG

Ravichandran Ashwin of Rajasthan Royals recently commended the exceptional performance of RR teammate Sandeep Sharma, hailing him as a "top 5 bowler" in IPL following his remarkable display against the Lucknow Super Giants in an entertaining encounter. 

Rajasthan Royals (RR) stepped into the IPL 2024 season with a comprehensive win over Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG) last week. 

Sanju Samson's sensational 83-run knock, supported by Riyan Parag's 43-run finish, helped RR post a par target of 194 runs for LSG.

While the wicket was a belter for batters, underdog Sandeep Sharma controlled things with the ball to shift the momentum back in RR's favor. He went for only 22 runs in his three overs and dismissed the dangerous spine of the LSG lineup, KL Rahul.

Applauding his heroics, Ravichandran Ashwin ranked Sandeep Sharma amongst the top 5 bowlers in IPL. He said the game of cricket is built on perceptions. While Sandeep might not seem a frontline bowler, his contributions have largely been unnoticed.  

Ashwin added how Sandeep Sharma is a fighter and has been covering for Prasidh Krishna since the previous season. Moreover, the two bouncers rule has been largely beneficial for Sharma as it helps him optimize his bowling arsenal.

"The game is built by perceptions, if you look at the way Sandy has bowled, he has been a top-5 bowler (in the IPL)- he's a character, does the dirty work for us, did a lot to cover for Prasidh in the last season as well. I see him as a fighter - bowlers getting 2 bouncers is the only fillip in this format and the bowlers are looking to use it,” Ashwin said in a post-match interview.

Needless to say, the acknowledgement from Ashwin, a senior and highly respectable figure in world cricket, serves as a testament to Sandeep Sharma's talent and impact on the game. 

Despite not being overly hyped, he continues to thrive under the shadows and win games for his side. 

And for Rajasthan Royals, Sandeep Sharma's resurgence is a blessing in disguise, especially after Prasidh Krishna's injury.
