Records in T20 cricket are meant to be broken. Faster pitches, shorter boundaries, and more matches every year are supposed to make yesterday’s numbers look small.

Abhishek Sharma, India’s young, exciting sensation, set the T20 stage on fire in 2025 with a record number of runs. He nearly missed out on surpassing Virat Kohli in an elite list but still managed to make a strong mark.

On that note, here’s a list of the most runs scored in the T20 format in a calendar year for India.

5. Yashasvi Jaiswal - 1297 runs (2023)

In 2023, Yashasvi Jaiswal was just blooming in international cricket. In 36 innings, he scored 1297 runs with 39.30 average, 158.55 strike rate, including 2 hundreds and 10 fifties. His highest score that year was 124.

As an opener, Jaiswal showed his fearless side and quickly rose in the ranks. However, due to his promotion and heavy workload in other formats, Jaiswal was dropped from India’s T20I team. Still, he is ruling the IPL as the aggressive opener of the Rajasthan Royals.

4. Suryakumar Yadav - 1338 runs (2023)

The 360° specialist, Suryakumar Yadav, aced the 2023 calendar year with 1338 runs in 33 T20 innings. He maintained an average of 46.13 with 166.41 strike rate, including 3 hundreds and 10 fifties. His highest score was 112*.

Given his sensational form and consistency, Suryakumar succeeded Rohit Sharma as the captain of India’s T20I team and will also lead the men in blue in the T20 World Cup 2026. In the middle order, he is an anchor while also having the ability to switch gears in the death overs.

3. Suryakumar Yadav - 1503 runs (2022)

2022 was the year Suryakumar Yadav became India’s most feared T20I batter. Scoops, ramps, pulls, nothing felt off-limits. In 41 T20I innings, he scored 1503 runs with 45.54 average, 175.99 strike rate, including 2 hundreds and 12 fifties.

Yadav also hit 85 sixes during this period. While the style was explosive, the sheer number of matches played is also the difference between dominance and durability. With back-to-back successive years, Yadav became the face of India’s new era in the T20 format.

India’s new age sensation, Abhishek Sharma, is carrying the torch forward. After a strong debut in 2024, he peaked in 2025. In just 40 T20I innings, the opener hammered 1602 runs with 41.07 average and 202.01 strike rate, including 3 hundreds and 9 fifties.

Abhishek, interestingly, smoked 108 sixes, the highest among this list. While he failed to surpass Virat Kohli by just a few runs, his dominance at 25 is impeccable and a sign that Indian cricket’s future is in safe hands.

1. Virat Kohli - 1614 runs (2016)

In 2026, Virat Kohli peaked like never before and redefined consistency. In just 29 T20I innings, he hammered 1614 runs at a staggering average of 89.66 and a strike rate of 147.13, including 4 hundreds and 14 fifties. In IPL itself, Kohli slammed 973 runs at 81.08 average to guide RCB to the final.

This was the year Virat Kohli seemed to be batting on a different frequency with minimal risk and maximum control. The most striking part? He needed far fewer innings than anyone else on the list. This record remains unbeatable and will likely be in the years to come.
