Ishan Kishan has been named as a wicketkeeper batter in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026. This development comes as BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav addressed the media on Saturday afternoon to reveal the player names in the squad for the New Zealand series and the mega ICC event in February.

This saw the omission of Shubman Gill from the squad, which led to mixed reactions on the internet. Ishan Kishan, however, received generous praise from netizens upon his comeback in the India T20I setup after more than two years.

Notably, Kishan’s last appearance in the format was against Australia in November 2023. Since then, Kishan has been giving hot and cold performances.

However, his selection in this squad can be credited to his recent SMAT 2025 form, where he averaged 57.44 in the tournament while having a strike rate of 197.33 from 10 matches.

The pocket dynamo was welcomed with open hands by the Indian cricket team fans as they thanked the BCCI and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee for choosing him.

Ishan Kishan’s selection in the squad means he will play both the New Zealand series and the World Cup. Without Jitesh Sharma, Kishan’s place in the Playing XI is almost confirmed, as Sanju Samson will be set to open with Abhishek Sharma.
