In a massive development, Shubman Gill was dropped from India’s 15-member squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Fans, meanwhile, expressed their mixed reaction on social media.

Gill made his T20I comeback as vice-captain earlier this year, but his form was nowhere close to being satisfactory.

His strike rate was poor as an opener, and he consistently failed to convert starts into big scores.

Fans back BCCI’s call to sack Shubman Gill

With pressure building and Sanju Samson, a proven opener, sitting on the bench, the BCCI had to take the hard call. On December 20, India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 and the 5-game T20I series against New Zealand was announced.

Shubman Gill was dropped for his poor form, and Axar Patel replaced him as vice-captain. The development spread like wildfire, and most fans backed the decision on social media.

A lot of people didn’t see Gill as skilled enough to make a difference as an opener. Moreover, after a string of poor performances, his snub made sense.

Interestingly, chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that Gill’s exclusion came down to team balance rather than form or ability.

Agarkar further clarified that India opted for a combination featuring two wicketkeepers at the top of the order, stressing that Gill remains highly rated and unlucky to miss out again.

Apart from Shubman Gill, Jitesh Sharma was also dropped as Ishan Kishan was chosen as the backup wicket-keeper to Sanju Samson after his stunning form in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Additionally, Rinku Singh has made a comeback as a specialist finisher. Suryakumar Yadav, however, has been retained as captain despite having an average of less than 30 in the last 20 T20Is.
