Being the only captain to have led the team in 100 Tests, Smith has an incredible record of winning the most Test matches during his tenure. He stands above all with 53 wins in 109 Test matches with a winning percentage of almost 50. 

Having featured in 117 Test matches for the South African team, he has led the team on 109 occasions and has amassed over 9,000 Test runs, including 27 centuries and 38 half-centuries with an amazing average of over 48 throughout his Test career. He comes right on top of the record for most Test wins as a captain.


Ricky Ponting - 48 Wins

The greatest Australian captain, Ricky Ponting has been immaculate with his leadership skills and has helped the Aussies win the World Cup twice. He has led the team to win two Champions Trophies as well during his tenure as the captain of the Australian team. When it comes to the longest format, leading in 77 Tests, he came out as the winning captain on 48 occasions. 

With his staggering record as the leader, he is the second-best captain in terms of winning most Test matches. In his Test career of 168 games, he has managed to hammer down over 13,000 runs, including 41 centuries and 62 half-centuries. He is also among the batters with the most number of Test centuries under their belt. 


Steve Waugh - 41 Wins

Steve Waugh is another batting giant from the Australian soil with over 10,000 Test runs. Throughout his Test career, he went on to smash 32 centuries and 50 half-centuries with a blistering average of 51. He was the revolutionary captain for the Australian team and helped the Aussies win the 1999 World Cup and also led the team to win a truckload of games in both Tests and ODIs. 

With 41 wins out of the 57 Test matches where he led the team, Steve Waugh with an amazing win percentage of 71.92, comes third on the list of most Test wins as the captain. His captaincy stint also included Australia's winning streak of 16 Test matches, where he was the leader on 15 occasions. 


Virat Kohli - 40 Wins

With his aggressive leadership skills, he went on to transform the Indian team and started winning games in the SENA countries. Under Virat's captaincy, India managed to reach the World Test Championship final in 2021. 

With nearly 9000 Test runs, including 29 centuries and 30 half-centuries, he has helped India win a truckload of games. He comes fourth on this record with a total of 40 wins out of the 68 Test matches, where he led the team. Under his captaincy, India won a Test series in Australia and won a couple of matches in England and one in South Africa as well. 


Clive Lloyd - 36 Wins

The greatest captain of the West Indies team, Clive Lloyd comes fifth on the list with 36 wins out of 74 occasions. A 6'4" tall batter, who smacked the best of bowlers and helped the Windies win two World Cups in the years 1975 and 1979. With over 7500 Test runs in 110 Test matches, Sir Clive Lloyd was nothing short of a match-winner for the Caribbean cricket. 

Lloyd laid the path for the future generation and was an immaculate force when it came to leadership. With 36 Test wins as captain, he is among the best captains in the longest format of the game.
