Top 3 Indian Players With The Most Runs As Captain In The T20Is

From the T20 World Cup 2007, there have been only three long-term captains of the Indian team in the shortest format of the game - MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and now Rohit Sharma. All three of them have been tough enough to create records and take the team to the knockouts in the ICC tournaments.

They were not just the captains of the team, but the pillars of Indian cricket, who carried the hopes of 1.4 billion Indian fans and still doing that passionately. While Dhoni has retired and Virat Kohli has left the captaincy, Rohit Sharma is still playing the role of a main character as he has been appointed to captain the T20 team ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 and he is on the verge of surpassing Virat Kohli in record for most runs in T20Is as the captain.

Let's have a look at the top 3 Indian captains with the most runs in the shortest format of the game.

Virat Kohli - 1570 runs

The right-handed Indian batter, Virat Kohli is the greatest batter among the current cricketers, whether in terms of runs scored or in terms of centuries he has at the international level. He is the only player who has crossed the 4000-run mark in the T20 Internationals. He took over the leadership duties from Dhoni as a full-time captain after the T20 World Cup 2016 and was nothing short of a force in the shortest format.

In 46 T20I innings, Virat amassed 1570 runs with a monstrous average of over 47. He notched up 13 fifty-plus scores during his time as the Indian captain, with the highest score of 94 not out against the West Indies. Now that he has been relieved from the captaincy, Rohit Sharma, the current Indian captain is just a few runs behind and might surpass him in the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan.

Rohit Sharma - 1527 runs

Whenever there's a discussion about hitting sixes, one cannot leave Rohit Sharma out of the discussion. He literally owns the record for hitting the most sixes in the history of international cricket. After Virat Kohli stepped down from the T20I captaincy, Rohit Sharma took over and it's been a couple of years now since he has been leading the Indian team in all three formats of the game. Rohit is the second-highest run-getter when it comes to the shortest format, with over 3800 runs at the international level.

The hitman is right behind Virat Kohli in terms of most runs as the captain of the Indian team. In 51 T20I innings so far, Rohit has hammered 1527 runs with a healthy average of over 32 and even has a couple of centuries and ten half-centuries under his belt. Being just 43 runs away from Virat Kohli, Rohit will probably become the Indian captain with the most runs in the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan.

MS Dhoni - 1112 runs

MS Dhoni is the only Indian captain to have helped India lift the T20 World Cup trophy, which came in the year 2007 and he achieved this feat in his very first ICC tournament as the captain of the Indian team. He also led India to the finals of the T20 World Cup 2014 and the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2016. Undoubtedly, he is the most successful Indian captain in all three forms of the game.

Dhoni comes third on the list being one of the three captains who have led the Indian team for a longer duration of time. In the 62 T20I innings, MS Dhoni amassed 1112 runs with an average of 37 and surprisingly, he never scored a fifty as the captain with 48 not being his highest score.
