The role of a cricket captain extends far beyond tactical nous or field placements, especially for those tasked with anchoring the batting order. Leading from the front, batting captains often shoulder the dual responsibility of guiding their side strategically all while setting the tone with the bat.
In Bangladesh’s case, the evolution of leadership has seen several top-order or middle-order batters rise to the occasion, blending authority with consistency. After Najmul Hossain Shanto’s historic outing with the bat in Galle, here is a look at five of Bangladesh’s most prolific batters in international cricket, in terms of number of centuries.
3. Mohammad Ashraful – 3 centuries
Former cricketer Mohammad Ashraful listed three centuries as captain of the Bangladesh cricket team, including two in Tests and another as ODI skipper. The charismatic right-handed batter led Bangladesh 62 times across all formats between the years 2007 and 2009, tallying over 1,500 runs, albeit at a below-par average of 23.24. Overall, Ashraful minted 5,028 runs in his 199-match career at an average of 22.54, recording six centuries and 24 additional scores of fifty or more. He made his final international appearance back in 2013 at the age of 29.
3. Mominul Haque – 3 centuries
Bangladesh batting all-rounder Mominul Haque plundered 13 tons and 25 fifties from 164 innings spanning 106 international matches. He listed three of those centuries as Bangladesh captain between the years 2019 and 2022 from 17 matches, all in Test cricket. In 31 innings as skipper, Mominul made 912 runs at an average of 31.44. Notably, the cricketer holds a much better record as a batter without captaining the national side, considering his overall Test average stands at a healthy 37.27.
2. Najmul Hossain Shanto – 4 centuries
Najmul Hossain Shanto scripted history by becoming the first Bangladesh captain to record two centuries in a single Test, doing so against Sri Lanka in June 2025 at the Galle International Stadium. After cracking 148 runs from 279 balls in the first Bangladesh innings, he scored an unbeaten 125 in the second gig to aggregate 273 runs in the match.
Shanto’s twin tons also extended his career tally to seven Test centuries, and three as national captain, catapulting him alongside some of the greats of Bangladesh cricket. Remarkably, the left-hander also has another century to his name as captain, albeit in ODIs to boast a total of four centuries as leader.
2. Shakib Al Hasan – 4 centuries
Legendary Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan scored one Test century and three ODI centuries as national captain between the years 2009 and 2023. Shakib additionally has 27 half-centuries while shouldering the leadership responsibility. His average also marks a healthy 32.98 as Bangladesh captain, and the blistering left-hander has aggregated 3,991 runs in 135 innings.
Overall, Shakib Al Hasan made nearly 15,000 runs at an average of 33.86 with 14 hundreds and 100 half-centuries from 447 matches across all international formats.
1. Mushfiqur Rahim – 5 centuries
Mushfiqur Rahim remains the most successful captain-batter in Bangladesh’s international history. Recording five centuries as national skipper, Rahim scored four of them in Tests and another in ODIs. Moreover, while the cricketer averages 37.37 overall in Tests, he averaged a prolific 41.44 in the format as captain. His international batting average of 36.57 as captain also marks a tad higher than his overall average of 34.20.
In 34 Tests as Bangladesh captain, Mushfiqur Rahim compiled 2,321 runs with four tons and 12 fifties. In 35 ODI innings as leader, he made 1,065 runs at 34.35.
