Bangladesh Honour Angelo Mathews Legacy

In the ongoing match, Bangladesh, batting first, put 495 runs on the board. In reply, Sri Lanka lost two wickets for 204 runs. Meanwhile, Angelo walked to bat as soon as the 2nd wicket fell. It was a special moment as Bangladesh stars lined up and paid respect to the 38-year-old by giving him a guard of honour.

The fans praised skipper Najmul Shanto for leading the initiative and putting the rivalry to rest. It is worth noting that things got tense between the two countries during the 2023 ODI World Cup in India when Mathews became the first-ever player in history to be given a time-out.

What Happened Between Mathews And Bangladesh Players During 2023 ODI World Cup?

Mathews accidentally broke the strap of his helmet, which couldn't allow him to play the first ball on time. However, then skipper Shakib Al Hasan, alongside present skipper Najmul Shanto decided to appeal, and the result went in their favour.

Angelo was furious with the decision, and it created an uproar in the Island Nation, where Shakib also received death threats if he thought of entering Sri Lanka.

It was not the end of the rivalry as the two teams soon met for a bilateral series, where Shoriful Islam teased Sri Lanka with time-out celebrations after taking a wicket. However, the Island Nation had the last laugh after they won the series and pulled out the 'Time-Out' celebration.

Sri Lanka's Heart-Touching Gesture For Angelo Mathews

In the latest events, Mathews shared a hug with Mushfiqur Rahim and Najmul Shanto, ending the long-standing rivalry. Well, it is not the first time that Bangladesh have given a guard of honour to the retiring star as they also presented Ross Taylor with a guard of honour as he played his last Test against The Tigers.

Before the start of the match, Sri Lanka players also presented Angelo Mathews with a special honour where they raised the bat in the air and thanked the Sri Lanka star for his contribution. Talking about the ongoing match, at the time of writing this article, Mathews is unbeaten on 38 (60).
