The latest in a series of IPL’s updated norms and regulations indicate that any Indian cricketer who played his last international match at least five years prior will enter the IPL 2025 mega auction horizon as an ‘uncapped player’. Another revamped rule suggest that franchises will be able to retain a maximum of two uncapped cricketers.

As fans, franchises and competing players brace themselves for the mega auction, here is a look at five potential Indian players who can enter the IPL 2025 scope as uncapped cricketers.

5. Karun Nair

Karun Nair, one of India’s only two Test triple centurions, played the last of his 76 IPL matches back in 2020 for the Punjab Kings franchise. Moreover, Nair played his previous international match in March 2017 during India’s home Test series against Australia.

While the charismatic right-handed batter has not been considered by any franchise since 2022, and has not been a part of any IPL playing XI since 2020, the 32-year-old might well be considered for selection (as an uncapped player) at the IPL 2025 mega auction courtesy of his splendid batting exhibition at the recently-concluded Maharaja T20 Trophy in Bengaluru.

4. Karn Sharma

A veteran in India’s domestic structure, Karn Sharma never lived up to his full potential in international cricket, largely owing to the limited opportunities he was bestowed upon by the then team management. The dazzling spin-bowling all-rounder played each of his four international matches for Team India during a brief three-month period in late-2014.

Moreover, the cricketer also demonstrated his hard-hitting dexterity with the bat earlier this year for the RCB. After smacking three sixes in four balls off IPL millionaire Mitchell Starc to nearly pull off an impossible win, Karn Sharma even drew comparisons with the legendary Brian Lara from netizens and RCB coach Andy Flower.

Considering his IPL 2024 exploits with both bat and ball, it remains a likely possibility that Sharma might well be retained by the RCB franchise ahead of the 2025 mega auction.

3. Amit Mishra

Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra played 22 Tests, 36 ODIs and 10 T20Is between the years 2003 and 2017. Having already announced his retirement from international cricket, the Haryana veteran remains one of the most cogent spin forces within the hallowed arenas of IPL.

Mishra has so far played 162 IPL matches for four different franchises since 2008. With an impressive haul of 174 scalps at an average of just 23.82, the 41-year-old currently stands as the seventh most successful bowler in the history of IPL, and fifth among spinners in terms of number of wickets taken.

While it is safe to say that some of Amit Mishra’s prime years are way past him, certain IPL franchises might still consider him for selection in a bid to groom young emerging spinners in the team.

2. Vijay Shankar

Indian all-rounder Vijay Shankar played the last of his 21 white-ball international matches back in June 2019 during the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England. Currently a part of the Gujarat Titans bunch in IPL, the cricketer minted 301 runs in 14 matches of the 2023 edition at a staggering strike rate of 160.11, with three belligerent half-centuries.

An explosive middle-order batter, Shankar holds a career IPL strike rate of nearly 130 and an average of 25.34. Having gone through an underwhelming season for the Titans earlier this year, it remains to be seen if Vijay Shankar will be retained by the franchise or will go under the hammer at the IPL 2025 mega auction as an uncapped player.

1. Piyush Chawla

Piyush Chawla, India’s two-time World Cup winning cricketer (2007 T20 and 2011 ODI), is currently the second highest wicket-taker in the history of the IPL. One of the occupants of the Mumbai Indians dressing room since 2021, Chawla is also accustomed with winning the IPL silverware, having bagged the 2014 edition for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

The 35-year-old likely played his last international match for Team India as he has not been considered for selection since December 2012. Regardless, Piyush Chawla continues to gain prominent relevance in IPL, considering he has picked up 35 wickets for Mumbai Indians in the past two editions combined.
