Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) went down by a run to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the latter’s home ground on April 21 in match number 36 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.

Chasing 223 to win, the visitors failed to score three runs off the final two balls despite Karn Sharma’s last-over heroics against Mitchell Starc.

Regardless of the outcome, Karn managed to garner a significant praise from RCB head coach and former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower, who compared the 36-year-old left-hander with West Indies great Brian Lara.

RCB, chasing KKR’s monumental 222-run total at the Eden Gardens, lost both their openers early before sparkling half-centuries from Rajat Patidar and Will Jacks kept them in the hunt. However, a colossal middle-order collapse once again titled the tide back in KKR’s favour, with RCB requiring 21 runs from Mitchell Starc’s final over of the match.

With RCB precariously placed at 202-8 at the time, number nine batter Karn Sharma launched three sixes of the first four deliveries of Starc’s over to take his team at the brink of an unlikely victory.

Sharma eventually lost his plot off the penultimate ball owing to a caught-and-bowled, as he made his way back to the sheds with a seven-ball 20 to his name.

After the match, RCB’s head coach Andy Flower hailed Karn’s last-over heroics, and even jokingly compared the tailender with West Indies batting great Brian Lara.

Karn Sharma along with the rest of his RCB cohorts will now face an all-firing SRH squadron in match number 41 of the IPL 2024 season.

The much-awaited contest will be staged on April 25 at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
