On Sunday, January 5, Australia beat India by six wickets at the SCG to clinch the series 3-1 and lift the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in the last ten years. The hosts celebrated the win in style, but the post-match presentation ceremony was marred with controversy as Cricket Australia didn't invite legendary Sunil Gavaskar on stage to present the trophy to Australia.

Cricket Australia Disrespects Sunil Gavaskar

Since the trophy is named after Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar, the fans criticised CA for just calling Border to hand over the trophy to the Pat Cummins-led side. The move also left Sunil Gavaskar fuming as he also talked about it and revealed that the CA had planned that they would have invited him on stage if India had drawn or won the series.

Meanwhile, this article will look at the throwback when both Gavaskar and Allan Border had presented the Trophy to former India captain Sourav Ganguly after India had retained the BGT in 2003 after drawing the series 1-1. It is worth noting that India retained the trophy because they won the BGT at home during the 2001 tour.

The move to not invite Gavaskar on stage was criticised heavily, and several prominent figures bashed Cricket Australia. In the latest events, the apex cricket board of Australia too acknowledged their mistake and revealed that it would have been ideal had they invited both during the post-match ceremony.

Why Didn't Gavaskar Present Ajinkya Rahane The BGT Trophy After Epic Gabba Win?

Going by Cricket Australia's logic, Sunil Gavaskar didn't present India with the BGT trophy after they won it at the Gabba during the 2020-21 series. Although, it is worth noting that the tour was held when COVID-19 was on the rise.

Thus, to avoid any problems, measures were kept in place, which is why no one presented the trophy and it was just placed on a stand from where Rahane picked it up and celebrated with his teammates.
