In a significant development, Sunil Gavaskar has called for a major rethink regarding the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, after their underwhelming performances in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
In a recent interview with India Today, Gavaskar expressed his concerns about Virat Kohli's technical flaws. He believes that his flaws related to his footwork is the main reason that is contributing to the his repeated dismissals on deliveries outside the off-stump.
"The (Kohli's) foot is not going to the pitch of the ball, the foot is going straight down the pitch, not towards the ball. If the foot goes more towards the ball, you have more chances of hitting the ball from the middle.Because the foot is not moving, you end up reaching for the ball, and that is what has been happening". Gavaskar told India Today.
Sunil Gavaskar Takes Brutal Dig At Kohli-Rohit's Form
It is important to note that, Virat Kohli's inability to fix his issues against deliveries outside off-stump has raised questions about his recent form.
Gavaskar did not spare Rohit Sharma either. The veteran player has emphasized that Rohit Sharma, had failed to provide the necessary stability at the top of the order, something which has placed undue pressure on the middle and lower order.
"It all depends on the selectors. The contributions that were expected have not come. It is the top-order which has to contribute, if the top-order is not contributing, why blame the lower-order. The seniors have not really made the contribution that they should have, all that they had to do was bat out today and live to fight another day in Sydney. It's just that the top order didn't contribute and that is the reason India found itself in this position," he added.
With the BCCI selectors facing increased scrutiny for their choices, Gavaskar made a pointed reference to the decision-making of chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, and his team.
