The Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) added another chapter to its storied history during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, as the match between India and Australia ended in just 1141 balls. The low number of balls bowled made it the third shortest result-oriented Test ever played at the venue.
For the unaware, Australia triumphed by six wickets, regaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 3-1 series victory. Despite Jasprit Bumrah’s heroics in the series, his absence from the bowling attack in the final innings left India vulnerable.

However, Sydney has been marred with the history of shortest result-oriented Match. The SCG has seen its fair share of brief yet dramatic Tests over the years with the lowest being 911 balls bowled in a match against Australia vs England.

1895 | Australia vs England | 911 |

What's common in all of these shortest result-oriented matches is the struggle of the batters to string a partnership on an unpredictable and fiery surface. The Sydney pitch which was supposed to be not so green and batting-friendly troubled the batters from the very beginning. Later, wide cracks were also seen that reasonably helped the seamers gain control of the game.

Consequently, SCG turned out to be the most exciting of all five venues in the series. The match lasted only 2.5 days, with India collapsing for 185 in the first innings and failing to deliver significant resistance in the second.
This rare occurrence of a modern-day Test ending in such a few balls also raised eyebrows about the quality of the pitch. While India has left the train for the WTC Final, Australia will be looking to defend the title against South Africa in June at Lord's.
