On Sunday, January 5, India crashed out of the WTC 2025 cycle after Australia handed the visitors a six-wicket defeat to join Australia for the epic showdown at Lord's from June 11-15. The Indian side lost their first BGT series in the last ten years as the baggy greens clinched the title with 3-1.

India are not enjoying a great run, and head coach Gautam Gambhir is under the radar over his performance. It is worth noting that the former India opener joined the side after the T20 World Cup, and his graph isn't promising.

Under Gambhir's tenure, India suffered an ODI series defeat in Sri Lanka, whitewashed at home vs New Zealand, and now lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Thus, the sword is hanging above GG's head, and he might even be replaced ahead of crucial tournaments such as the Champions Trophy. Meanwhile, this article will examine three players who can replace Gambhir as India's head coach.

1. WV Raman

When Gambhir was signed as India's head coach, the Cricket Advisory Committee had also shortlisted former India women's head coach WV Raman. Thus, the BCCI might again revert to Raman to guide India in 2025.

Raman holds a prolific record as a coach in domestic cricket as he coached Tamil Nadu, who won the Vijay Hazare Trophy in the 2008-09 season and also was the batting coach for KKR during their title-winning season in 2014.

Further, Raman was India's women's head coach from 2018-2021. Under his coaching, India women reached the finals of the 2020 T20 World Cup, their best finish in an ICC T20I tournament.

2. VVS Laxman

Another name and one of the frontrunners to replace Gambhir as India head coach is VVS Laxman. The former India batter has acted as a back-up India coach for the past years. Even during Dravid's tenure, Laxman has often taken up the coaching role against a low-ranked side.

Laxman, who is also the head of NCA, recently went with team India as their head coach when India travelled Zimbabwe and South Africa for T20I series in 2024. Thus, the right-hand batter is in constant touch with BCCI and also share a great rapport with the players in the dressing room.

3. Ravi Shastri

Shastri is India's go-to-man  during crisis. The 61-year-old enjoyed a great run as India head coach from 2017-2021, where he made a name for himself to do well on foreign soil. Although, his tenure ended on a sour note, Shastri can definitely return for a second tenure as India head coach.

Looking at the history of players who have coached Indian team, then Shastri's name pops up the most. He first joined as an interim head coach in 2007. Then, Ravi acted as India's team director from 2014-2016, before returning as head coach from 2017-21.
