Veteran Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra recently criticised Shubman Gill, for being clueless as captain and questioning his leadership skills after a lacklustre performance as captain in the IPL and T20I series against Zimbabwe.
Shubman Gill, the prince of Indian cricket, was promoted as captain of Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2024 season after Hardik Pandya joined Mumbai Indians (MI). However, his debut season was underwhelming, as he won only 5 of the 14 league games.
Despite the awful debut, Shubman Gill was made captain of the Indian cricket team travelling to Zimbabwe for a 5-game T20I series. While India won the series 4-1, former Indian spinner Amit Mishra was largely unimpressed with the young gun.
Amit Mishra unimpressed with Gill's captaincy !
In an interview with journalist Shubhankar Mishra, Amit Mishra revealed that Shubman Gill is unfit for captaincy as he is clueless in the field. From IPL to the Zimbabwe series, Gill appeared a bad captaincy choice.
"I would not have made him the captain. You saw the IPL this season, Gill doesn't know how to captain the side, he is clueless," Mishra said.
Not only that, Mishra feels Gill shouldn’t be made the captain just because he is an active Indian team member.
"I've seen him (Shubman Gill) in the IPL, and he doesn't know how to do captaincy. He has no idea about captaincy. Why they made him captain is a question. Just because he's in the Indian team doesn't mean he should be made captain," he added.
Better options such as Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rishabh Pant, and Sanju Samson exist. Hence, Mishra called for the bias towards Gill to stop.
Shubman Gill Fails As Captain In Duleep Trophy
India A, led by Shubman Gill, recently lost the opening round of the 2024 Duleep Trophy against India B by 76 runs. After being asked to chase 257, India A collapsed to 198 runs courtesy of Yash Dayal’s three-wicket haul.
Gill let his team down with just 46 runs in two innings. He accepted that his plans as a captain could have been better. Because the season just started, his bowlers got tired, allowing Musheer Khan to score a match-defining century.
