On September 28, 2018, Rohit Sharma led India to a memorable Asia Cup triumph as captain. In the absence of Virat Kohli, Rohit stepped up to the challenge, guiding a young and balanced Indian side to the title while contributing significantly with the bat.

Weeks heading into the 2018 Asia Cup tournament, regular all-format captain Virat Kohli opted out of the event citing workload management, thus paving the way for Rohit Sharma’s promotion.

Though Rohit led Mumbai Indians to glory in the IPL, leading the Indian cricket team was a different ballgame. With an inexperienced group at his helm, Sharma embraced the challenge brilliantly.

Rohit Sharma's Captaincy Reign Began With A Bang In 2018!

Rohit Sharma began the tournament on a steady note, scoring 23 off 22 balls against Hong Kong in India’s opening match. Later, he led from the front with a commanding knock of 52 from 39 balls against Pakistan, setting the tone for India’s eight-wicket victory.

Rohit’s standout innings came against Bangladesh and Pakistan in the Super Four stage. Against Bangladesh, Rohit played an unbeaten 83 off 104 balls, whereas against Pakistan, he hammered a scintillating 111* from 119 balls.

In the final against Bangladesh, Rohit’s 48 off 55 balls was pivotal in India’s thrilling chase. Despite a few hiccups toward the end, India edged past Bangladesh by three wickets to lift the Asia Cup trophy.

This was Rohit Sharma’s first major victory as Indian captain, which solidified his stature in Indian cricket.
