Kane Williamson is arguably the best Test batter produced by the New Zealand side, and he continued the dominance in 2024 as well. Despite the Kiwis not performing at their best in Test cricket this year, Williamson has been their lone shining light.

In the ongoing Test match against Sri Lanka, Williamson struggled in the first innings, and was dismissed for a pain-staking 53-ball 7 by Prabath Jayasuriya. However, in the second innings, Williamson showed his attacking instincts and came to the crease with a positive frame of mind.

He played some attacking shots and just when things looked good for the Kiwi batter, he was dismissed for a well-compiled 46 off 58 deliveries. Despite getting knocked over, the Kiwi great achieved a significant milestone and went past India's Virat Kohli in the run-scoring record.

Williamson now has 8881 runs in Test cricket in 102 Test matches, at an average of well above 50. Kohli, on the other hand has 8871 runs in 114 Test matches, at an average of 48.74. Interestingly, this is the first time in 6 years that Williamson has more Test runs than the India legend.

Williamson struggled in ongoing Test match

On a spin-friendly Galle surface, Williamson struggled for runs in the first innings. While Sri Lanka belted the Kiwi bowlers all-round the park, courtesy of a brilliant ton from Kamindu Mendis, New Zealand batter struggled for runs in his first innings.

He was too defensive and Jayasuriya took advantage of it. In the second innings, he looked sharp and had the hunger for runs, but one false shot resulted in his prized wicket as the Kiwis are on the verge of defeat in the second Test.

He looked good in the first Test with a good-looking fifty runs, but in the last 3 innings has looked scratchy.
