In a deeply emotional and memorable event at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, India’s ODI captain Rohit Sharma inaugurated the ‘Rohit Sharma Stand’ by putting his parents at the heart of the ceremony. But only a little is known about them.
Rohit is one of the most iconic names in Indian cricket. Hailing from Mumbai, he led India to the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy wins. Moreover, in the IPL, Mumbai Indians won 5 titles under his captaincy.
Hence, to honour his legacy, MCA named a stand after him at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. While Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis was supposed to inaugurate the stand, Rohit called his parents to the stage to do the honour.
Who Are Rohit Sharma’s Parents?
Rohit Sharma was born to Gurunath Sharma and Purnima Sharma in Nagpur. His father, Gurunath, worked as a caretaker in a transport firm. Financial crises led the family to take drastic decisions, and Rohit spent his childhood in Mumbai with his grandparents while his parents lived separately.

In spite of the physical distance, his father's contribution towards supporting the family became the basis for the future of Rohit.
His mother, Purnima, originally from Visakhapatnam, has been Rohit's emotional anchor. Though separated by distance during Rohit's early years, her influence has always been present. As a homemaker, she supported her son’s dream to serve the country.

Despite Rohit Sharma being an icon in Indian cricket, his parents like to keep a low profile. They ditch the limelight and enjoy matches from the comfort of their home. However, the couple marked their rare presence during the victory parade held at Wankhede Stadium in July last year to celebrate India’s T20 World Cup win.
